Wrestling Weekend - March 16-17, 2024

18 Mar by Tami Wood

What a busy weekend of wrestling for Sandpoint Legacy. There were kids on the mats in four different tournaments and wrestling in all three styles!

At the WLGWL tournament in Spokane West Valley, the bulk of our team was ready to wrestle after the let down last week. With 24 kids on the final roster, the team pulled in 18 medals after 19 made the finals – almost every kid won at least one match and the team had the second highest win percentage. Sounds like our team earned some good karma points for keeping another team’s table running when they abandoned it mid tournament – so a HUGE thank you to all the parents for going above and beyond.

Three hours south we had a smaller group geared up for Freestyle and Greco at the Gator Memorial in Lewiston. The laid-back atmosphere with a focus on fun and learning was a great intro to the Freestyle/Greco season. A downside to the first tournaments is they are not as highly attended so many brackets were re-grouped, and we had to wrestle up in age and weight to get some competition. For some, those were their best matches for working their moves, for others not so much as we had two injuries during Greco in the Junior division. Fingers are crossed that John and Dominic are feeling better and on the mend.

Way down south….or at least as far as Caldwell, Maxx Watson competed in the Cradle for the Cure tournament on Sunday. After a strong day of wrestling, he successfully defended his 2nd place finish in the true-second wrestle back in the 11–12-year-old 95lb bracket.

And one last shout out to Dalton Regehr and Damon Therrien who, though wrestling under the Bonners banner, also spent the weekend wrestling all three styles in Centralia, WA. Dalton worked hard and brought home two first place medals in Greco and Folkstyle.
