Wrestling Weekend - December 7-8, 2024

9 Dec 2024 by Tami Wood

Congratulations to Sandpoint Legacy wrestlers past and present who put in time on the mats this weekend!

Saturday was a busy day in Sandpoint for wrestling as the SMS Bullpups hosted the District Championships and SHS hosted the Boys JV and Girls Blizzard Tournament.

Over at the Middle School, Sandpoint Legacy wrestlers, as part of the SMS team, competed to bring home some hardware. Maxx Watson placed 1st at 110lbs, Axel Jones was 2nd at 130lbs, and Paden Hinds took 4th in the 144lbs class. Cole Martin and Tommy Holeman wrestled hard against some tough opponents but took their second loss in the consolation rounds missing the podium this year.

A couple of families were bouncing between gyms to catch the action over at SHS where several Legacy wrestlers were representing the Bulldogs for the first time. In the Girls’ Blizzard Tournament, Vanessa Hood and Avery Inge both earned 1st place in their respective weight classes while Summer Birch placed 4th in the super tough 114lb bracket. On the boys’ side in the JV tournament, 1st place medals went to Jason Symons, Connor Brown and Gage Martin. Rounding out the medals was Daniel Holman who finished 3rd.

Sunday brought four of our little guys to the gym in Deer Park, WA for the Deer Park Folkstyle tournament. Following the tournament wasn’t as easy with the switch to a new program but at the end of the day Braxley Hatfield was the 1st place finisher in the 10U 52lb class, Colt Russell took 3rd in 8U 43lbs and Reed Russell was 4th in 8U 49lbs. Kormac Dunn unfortunately didn’t collect a win but gained experience in his 12U bracket.

The mix of winter wrestling opportunities may spread the team out, but we are super proud of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by SLWC wrestlers wherever they are competing, and we wish everyone good luck and much success this season even if we can’t be there in person.
