The tournament that used to signify the end of the season is now pretty much just another step in our journey to bigger and better competition throughout the winter. The Panhandle Classic or NIWL Championship was held in the Courts at Real Life on Saturday. We had a few kids getting their first taste of 16-man brackets and the endurance it takes to make it through each round after a loss bumps you to the consolation side. Our 6U crew faced the first matches where a pin-was-a-pin and there was hardware on the line.
After a couple of scratches, we had 39 wrestlers working hard to make it to the finals and earn an individual medal. 16-man brackets medaled to sixth place while 8-man and round robin brackets presented medals to third. 16-man brackets are more prevalent in the younger divisions with the most common weight classes, while all our 14U wresters were fighting for a spot in the top three.
Tough wrestling led to some great finishes and 26 medals collected. One of the best finishes brought Reed Russell his gold medal with a 10-3 win over a wrestler he faced every weekend in the finals and had yet to beat. Congratulations to everyone who faced a challenge and either won the match or learned another lesson for the next time.
