With just a couple of practices under their belts…and about a 20-minute rundown on Greco, there were seven Sandpoint Legacy wrestlers up for some live learning on the mat at the Freestyle and Greco tournament in Cheney on Sunday.

The entire team signed up for both sessions at the Battle for the Roost to double their mat time and get a feel for both styles. Some of the competitors out of Washington were definitely more skilled in the Greco and Freestyle moves, which gave our group a good challenge.

Coach Wood emphasized during warm-ups that the day was all about having fun and learning. The faster pace and offensive-focused wrestling are great for helping kids work on being more explosive and aggressive. We have more of these tournaments on the local schedule and we will continue to improve each weekend.

Some of our wrestlers collected more lessons than wins but we ended the day with a handful of medals. Congratulations team on pushing past your comfort zone and working hard on these new skills!
